Gary Vaynerchuk from Wine Library gave a very pointed presentation at Web 2.0 Expo NY about doing what you love in the new world of social internet. He pulls no punches when he tells you that you should do what you love now and stop doing the stuff you hate to do.
While some may think that Gary is just an loud and obnoxious east coast guy, he is a guy who really cares and is passionate about life. Watch his presentation to get inspired to do what you love.
Warning: Contains “colorful language” in places, so may not be safe for work if you have the speakers up.
Some of the things he talks about in the video include (paraphrased):
Patience & Passion
There is no reason in this day and age to do stuff you hate.
It takes time to build your business and brand before it starts paying off big.
You need to do more than just listen to your customers, you need to care, and actually do something.
Ask yourself: what do you want to do for the rest of your life and do that.
You can figure out how to monetize your passion, because there is someone out there somewhere who will buy or advertise on your site.
Keep hustling. If you want it to happen, you need to make it happen.
Don’t build something just to sell it later; make money along the way.
Build it for your legacy. What will your great great great grandchildren think of your contributions?
The gatekeepers are no longer in control.
If you are pumping out good stuff, people will follow.
But if you, for a second, don’t believe in what you are doing, you need to get out now.
Understand that this is business.
Understand that the game is changing. You now own your own content. The radio and television people are no longer in control.
You need to build brand equity in yourself, because you never know what can happen.
There is never a bad time if you believe, work hard, and know what you are doing.
You have to do what you love. If you love it, you will win.
The only way to success today is to be totally transparent, so that your legacy is your ultimate life.
When you have brand equity, anything can happen.
Use all of the social media tools. Your you need to connect with your user base any way you can.
Before you needed a lot of media attention to build a brand, but now if you get talked about enough in all these social webs, you can build you brand / your company’s brand.
It all starts when you look in the mirror and ask “what do I want to do?”
You can start in your spare time, after work. If you have to work 9 to 5 and then do your passion after that, do it.
If you want to do stuff, work.
